Blackwater
National Wildlife Refuge
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 27,000 acres on Maryland's beautiful Eastern Shore and has been designated a "Wetlands of International Importance" by the Ramsar Convention.
As a major stop on the Atlantic Flyway, Blackwater is a vital haven for waterfowl, as well as a sanctuary for the American bald eagle, the endangered Delmarva fox squirrel, and the peregrine falcon.
The Friends of Blackwater invite you to come explore the Refuge "Time" magazine once called "nature on the throne of her glory." Come see what all the fuss is about - we know you won't be disappointed.

Chesapeake
Bay Environmental Center
The Wildfowl Trust of North America, Inc. (WTNA) was founded in 1979 as a direct response to the dwindling waterfowl population of the Chesapeake Bay. In 1981, the Trust purchased 315 acres in Grasonville, Maryland, on which it built the Horsehead Wetlands Center. In 2002 the Horsehead Wetlands Center was renamed and became the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center(CBEC). The Center developed its programs and exhibits to serve the general public statewide and to educate the region’s residents to appreciate the unique natural environment of the Chesapeake Bay, in particular wetlands and wildlife that inhabit them. The Trust developed a vigorous education program for children and adults and is addressing the curricular needs of Maryland’s students. The resident raptors and natural flocks of waterfowl inhabiting the peninsula’s shores have become genuine ambassadors for their species and wetlands education. The resident raptors frequently accompany the staff to schools and community events.

The Center’s property features a variety of habitats including mature hardwood forest, fresh and brackish marsh, meadow, tidal and non-tidal wetlands, over a mile of shoreline on a tidal creek, and cropland. Two hundred and seventy acres are devoted to low impact “best management practice” agriculture. The farmed acreage of Pickering Creek is its link to the significant farming heritage of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
